Shoulderstand Variation (Supported Inversion) - Yoga Pose Tutorial



Yoga Upload with Maris Aylward - Do you find shoulder stand pose uncomfortable? This supported inversion is a great alternative to the traditional shoulder stand (Sarvangasana). We use blocks (or a stack of books) to elevate the hips. That way, there is no need to use the upper body and arms to support the weight of the lower body.

In this variation, we also make sure the neck is safe. We are not overstretching the back of the neck nor putting a lot of pressure on it. You will be able to relax more in this mild inversion. Use this as a substitute for shoulder stand if you find you are not able to breathe properly in the traditional pose.

Experiment with different heights and positioning of the block/s or stack of books. Make sure you feel stable and the edge is not digging into your low back. You want this to feel good! :) Upper body positioning is similar to Bridge pose. Move the shoulder blades towards each other and slide them down your back. The effect would be a slight puffing out of the chest, lengthening of the back of the neck, and keeping the shoulders away from the ears. Make sure the back of the neck feels good. Keep some space between the back of the neck and the floor even with the chin slightly tucked in. You can explore different variation in the lower body too. You can stay with knees bent and knees stacked over the hips. Or straighten the legs up and lightly activate the feet.

Try holding for at least 1 minute. Do this at the end of the day if your legs and feet are tired.
